Mary Mwariri, 40, of 91B New Dunstable Road, was arrested last year on a felony theft charge, alleging she swindled investors through a Ponzi scheme, promising high rates of return without any way of delivering. Police said Mwariri pitched a program she called “The Women of God,” claiming it was designed to aid Christian women. Mwariri had been free on bail while the case was pending in Hillsborough County Superior Court. On Tuesday, Judge David Sullivan approved an agreement that Mwariri and her lawyer, Steven Levesque of Nashua, struck with Assistant Hillsborough County Attorney Catherine Devine. M/s Mwirari was arrested last year in August after a famous "merry go round" that was going in the Kenyan community where local women and of course men were giving out $5k to others in a classic pyramid scheme. The only problem is that the one's at the bottom complained. Police charge Mwariri solicited participants by word of mouth within the Nigerian and Kenyan immigrant communities, and dealt with people in person. She described “The Women of God” as a program to aid Christian women, Lavoie said, and she only took money from women. ![]() Mary Mwirari Mug Shot “She called it a gift-giving program that gave funds through Christian women,” Lavoie said. She asked for cash investments of either $2,500 or $5,000, which she said would result in payments totaling $20,000 or $40,000 respectively within 30 days, Lavoie said. The deal calls for the theft charge to be reduced to a misdemeanor, and the case continued without any finding or disposition for one year. Mwariri’s plea of innocence still stands, and the agreement doesn’t call for any conviction or admission of guilt. After one year, in September 2008, the charge will be dismissed if Mwariri has repaid all the money to 17 different people listed in the agreement. Mwariri apparently has already paid some people back, as some of the persons are listed with a zero balance. The agreement calls for payments ranging from $1,450 to $4,000 to others.
