How High Speed Cable will Change My Life in Kenya
Written by makii

The world of fibre optic cable is coming to Kenya at last.  With the Communications Commission of Kenya  approving 5 companies to bid for the construction of a submarine fibre-optic cable linking the Kenya coast to the UAE,  and Kenya setting aside 1 billion shillings for the project , we are about to have the next economic revolution in Kenya.

The Kenya government is getting excited about the possibility of reducing broadband costs from the current $7500 so that calling center companies like skywebevans can make Kenya a calling center hub. However as the government is excited about calling center, I am not the government so I have other reasons to be excited.

 Kenyans On the Internet

1. Cheap Phone Calls From Kenya

Don't tell telkom yet but with high speed internet , I can be able to call anyone I want in the world using skype that this time won't hang, and for free. It is tiring to call guys in Kenya with this $5 phone cards to only talk for 30 minutes when the same card to mexico will talk for 500 days.

2. Own my home Computer in Kenya

I will be able to own my own computer in my house. One of the reasons I am still a Kenya expartriate is because I depend on my computer and every time I hear that one cannot even download and mp3 in Kenya without living the internet on the whole night, I decide to reschedule my going back home.

Please please Telkom , Safaricom or whatever they are called now, speed up the internet. Charging $100 per month just to recieve email in my house is not internet connection, it's robbery  without violence.

3. Start my Online Business In Kenya

Come on Kenyan Entreprenuers . How come I can't even buy a tv online for my mom back home? All I get are Kenyan websites that say, "under construction" . What the hell are you constructing? The so called buy a car in Kenya website is in Japanese.

It is time Kenyan entreprenuers went online and if this cable network does not do it, nothing will.

 4.Online Dating in Kenya

Ok this is my pet peeve. But it's cheaper to meet someone online rather than taking that mathree to Nairobi City Center.

Let's get this cable network working and if google can choose to come to Kenya , so will I .

Food for thought, did you know there is only one business that we pay more the worse the service gets? yes, as ironical as it sounds there is....

The answer is the internet... Cybers are known for slowing down their internet access speeds which keep me and you sitting and waiting...oh! and paying more.

well, from a business point of view there is no incentive from the powers to be to make it cheaper and accessible to the masses. But time may prove me wrong!! I'm too cynical..
